چکیده

In this paper, we propose a new concept of visual/haptic interfaces called WYSIWYF display. The proposed concept provides correct visual/haptic registration using a visionbased object tracking technique and a video keying technique so that what the user can see via a visual interface is consistent with what he/she can feel through a haptic interface. Using Chroma Keying, a live video image of the user’s hand is extracted and blended with the graphic scene of the virtual environment. The user’s hand “encounters” the haptic device exactly when his/her hand touches a virtual object in the blended scene. The first prototype has been built and the proposed concept was demonstrated.

WYSIWYF Display: A Visual/Haptic Interface to Virtual Environment

To build a VR training system for visuomotor skills, an image displayed by a visual interface should be correctly registered to a haptic interface so that the visual sensation and the haptic sensation are both spatially and temporally consistent. In other words, it is desirable that what you see is what you feel (WYSIWYF). In this paper, we propose a method that can realize correct visual/hapti...

What you see is what you feel

In this paper, we will present an approach to design a more natural user interface without taking resort to special haptic input/output devices. Tactile sensations like stickiness, touch, or mass can be evoked by applying tiny displacements upon cursor movements. Our active cursor method exploits the domination of the visual over the haptic domain. We will show that interactive animations can b...

Haptic Illusions: What You Feel Isn’t Always What You Get

In this paper, we present the discovery of new haptic illusions, and a method for creating further haptic illusions. Pure haptic illusions were created by mixing force cues with geometric cues to make people feel shapes that differ from the actual shape of the object. In particular, we found that an area that feels harder to move through and easier to move out of can be interpreted as a region ...

Audio makes a difference in haptic collaborative virtual environments

In this paper a study is presented which aimed at exploring the effects of audio feedback in a haptic and visual interface supporting collaboration among sighted and people who cannot see. A between group design was used and the participants worked in pairs with one sighted and one blindfolded in each. The application used was a haptic 3D environment in which participants could build composed o...
